“a touch of shadows of time and harvest” Project for ĀBOLOŠANA

“a touch of shadows of time and harvest” Project for

ĀBOLOŠANA , Aizpute, Latvia 01.09.-15.09.2024

I created two specifically works and presented an existing work adapted to the site. The two special works include the video work “Ornaments of the Empty Times in Autumn”. The video was shot in the house at Atmodas iela 9, in Misiņkalnaparks and in the rural surroundings of the town of Aizpute. The house itself is a national moment under the care of SERDE. The second site-specific work is the spatial installation “9052” or “a touch of shadows of time and harvest”. The third work was my life performance “The Plant”, which, as I mentioned, was adapted to the space and for a part integrated my installation into the performance.

All three works together reflect the themes of time, reflection, transitions, emptiness, standstill and harvest in a broader sense. In addition, all works contain autobiographical elements and thoughts. But beyond that, the terms and titles “Empty Times” and “a touch of shadows of time and harvest” refer to a special time between late summer and early autumn in my personal vision. A phase in the annual cycle characterized by a calm, almost magical, melancholic atmosphere, in which nature comes to rest before autumn begins. This empty time is a phase of pause and reflection, in which nature and life stand still and prepare for the coming change. This period is very short, only a few days, and I wish it would never, ever end... the empty time in between.

The project was made possible with the kind support of SERDE

《 12x12x12+ Nature / Nature Art Cube Exhibition》

12x12x12+ Nature - / -Nature Art Cube Exhibition of Geumgang Nature Art Biennale 2024

24/08/ - 31/10//2024 / Daily except Mondays 10.00-17.00 h

Exhibition Venue: Geumgang Nature Art Center, Gongju City, Republic of Korea

12x12x12+ Nature / Nature Art Cube Exhibition, which has been conducted as one of the indoor exhibitions of Geumgang Nature Art Biennalesince 2017, is a program that seeks to interpret and broaden awareness of nature in various ways of thinking and expression in a 12cm cube. In fact, dealing with nature in a limited space is not as easy as you might think, but on the other hand, because it is a limited space, paradoxically, you may be able to show more imagination.

About my cube “Cube 6041”

A solid cube made of wood and tree parts. A symbol of stability and compactness in nature. And yet a material that lives, changes, and perishes. It is not a symbol of the cycle of life, but in this case a cube of life. But also a contrast between man-made forms and natural forms

TRACES

Five photographic works and two new videos works “floating traces of empty worlds and time” & “nothing will stay as it was” will be on view in the group exhibition “Traces” in the Main hall of the Museum of Nonconformist Art from September 7 to October 27, 2024. More than twenty artists will present their interpretations of the theme in photographs, installations, objects, graphics and video works. The opening is on September 7, 2024 at 17:00 h.

Curated by Anastasia Patsey

The five photographic work belong to my ongoing photo portfolio “Traces and traces in many cities”. The two recent video works “floating traces of empty worlds and time” and “nothing will remain as it was” were originally created specifically for the theme of traces

Every word we say, every step we take, every action leaves a trace. Some traces are exact prints, in them you can easily recognize the original object. Others are more like shadows that leave room for the imagination. Our attitude towards footprints can also be very different. Sometimes we want to leave a trace, and sometimes vice versa–we want to remain unnoticed. This is what we invite artists and viewers to reflect on,” says Anastasia Patsey, the director of MNA and curator of the exhibition. Working with the theme of traces, the artists chose different optics. Some of them study the environment around them, while others look inside themselves.

“a touch of shadows of times and harvest “ Project

a touch of shadows of times and harvest

Upon invitation from SERDE a Latvian non goverment culture and hertiage association, in the first half of September 2024 I will be back in Latvia for a new interdisciplinary project, this time in the town of Aizpute. The place is only 65 km away from Pedvale Art Park in Sabile, Latvia, where I had a project in May last year. However, both places and projects are different from each other. It will be an interdisciplinary project again, this time on the theme of time and harvest. The project will be implemented in conjunction with the Appel Culture Festival. I plan to make a site-specific video, an installation and present a revision of my performance “The Plant”.

joh - images online shop on Redbubbles

joh-images my new online shop on Redbubbles

Since I am always looking for ways to push my art towards new horizons, I like to try out new possibilities. But I have to mention that I am pursuing two tracks. One track is for my interdisciplinary and multimedia art including collaboration and intercultural projects. The other track is more focused on so-called decorative art and design. Prints, illustrations and design drafts that serve as templates for postcards, home and office furnishings, scarves, mugs, T-shirts and many other things. That is why I have now set up an onlineshop under joh-images for my decorative art on Redbubble. Redbubble acts as an intermediary between creator and customer. Their service allows artists to post and retail their designs, and will produce their products on demand and send them directly to customers.

This makes the process of manufacturing easier on the artist, and the process of browsing friendlier to the customer. Redbubble lets you shop thousands of artist-created products, from classic art prints, new stickers or mugs, phone cases, fan tees, home decor, and fun gift ideas, all searchable by intuitive, well-organized categories. However, I have a very wait-and-see attitude towards the newly established online shop. It simply remains to be seen how the new shop develops and if it brings any kind of progress in the long term.

NNOI 9 #

My latest sound art creation 9 X MA premieres at

NNOI 9 #

19-21 July 2024,

NNOI is open air festival focusing on sound, sound art, electronic and experimental music other “obscure teachings”

NNOI, will take place in Zernikow and the surrounding area in the Neuruppiner Land in the State of Brandenburg, Germany . The historical Prussian, belt ensemble with a manor house, church, distillery, barns, mill, surrounded by a stream and extensive forest in a landscape conservation area . On the occasion of the 9th edition the festival want to deal with the mythical number NINE. The highest, therefore perfect single-digit number is deeply charged with symbolism, customs and associations. Whether the number of lives of a cat, Dante's circles of hell, the curse of the Ninth Symphony, dragons, muses or names for flora and fauna, NOIN9 can in-spire omnipresent.

9 x MA. The piece was created for this year's NNOI 9 # festival theme. In this work there are nine points that interrupt the generally monographic flow of sound. The sound of these 9 highlights has nothing in common with the rest of the constant flow of the basic sound. The sound is similar to hitting two bamboo sticks or hitting a hollow wooden vessel with a wooden stick. The concept of this sound piece is based on the Japanese philosophy of MA. With MA, the Japanese describe the intentional distance created by a short pause between actions or by the empty space between objects. A distance that is not emptiness or lost time, but represents a special connection. The Japanese concept of Ma is something that relates to all aspects of life. It has been described as a pause in time, an interval or emptiness in space. Ma is the fundamental time and space from which life needs to grow. Space for the Japanese psyche directly impacts the individual’s progress. These principles are universal, when applied effectively they enhance the way one thinks and how one engages with one’s surroundings.
